Mississippi River Pool 4

The area of the Mississippi River between Lock and Dam #3 at Red Wing and Lock and Dam #4 at Alma Wisconsin is known as Pool 4.  This area is well known as great fishing water and Pool 4 is one of the Mississippi’s most popular stretches.

The discharge from the Prairie Island Power Plant keeps the water near the Red Wing dam open year round.  This area can get very crowded in the early spring as anglers from all over the area (including the Twin Cities) flock to catch the springtime spawn of walleyes & sauger.  Other species present include catfish, white bass, smallmouth & largemouth bass.  This area has many backwaters that also hold northern pike, crappies and sunfish.  Look for current breaks, eddies and wing dams to hold fish.

By early May the walleyes begin to make their slow journey down into Lake Pepin.  Pepin is part of Pool 4 but it has it’s own characteristics that make it different than the rest of the river.  It’s deeper, the water is clearer and their isn’t much mid-lake structure so most of the attention by anglers is paid to working the shorelines.  Lake Pepin has over 25,000 acres of water to explore and boat accesses are located in many locations on both sides of the lake.

Lock & Dam #4 at Alma, Wisconsin offers great spring walleye/sauger fishing also, but you may have more room to fish as the crowds are not as big as at Red Wing.  There is a nice fishing float just below the damn that has excellent fishing from the pre-spawn spring to mid summer.
